Cool Country Engineering

Helping you turn your structural dreams into reality

I bring a blend of intense nerdiness and practical fabrication experience to provide my clients with structural solutions to technically challenging problems that also take into account the realities of fabrication and construction.

Committed to structural excellence

Explore what skills I can bring to your project

Steel Connection Design

A chain is only as strong as the weakest link, and connections are critical to the success of every structure. Whether working for a fabricator doing delegated connection design or serving as Engineer of Record, I’ve been dealing with complex structural connections since 2010. I’ve used a variety of analysis and design tools over the years, but currently use one of the best FEA-based connection design tools on the market to allow me the freedom to engineer a safe solution to almost any conceivable connection challenge.

Stair Design

Whether you need a simple egress stair in an enclosed stairwell, or a cantilevered-tread monostringer steel stair with glass guardrails wrapping around the room, or a cantilevered-landing switchback with glass treads and landings, or a vibrationally-sensitive, longspan monumental stair, or a multistory CLT stair, I can help you achieve your goals.

Steel-framed Building Design

I’ve worked on a variety of single- and multi-story steel buildings over the years, using braced frames and moment frames, in both low and high-seismic regions, and in both typical and high-wind regions.

Mass Timber Building Design

Is mass timber the next big thing or just a passing fad? What would it take to make mass timber work for your project? I’ve worked on several mass timber projects the last few years either as Engineer of Record or as part of the structural team, where I utilized both glulam chevron braces and, most recently, balloon-framed CLT shear walls for the lateral force-resisting system. This has been a fascinating development in structural design that has led me to do a lot of research in international literature. Let me bring that knowledge and experience to your project.

Licensed in 20 states

I am currently licensed in the following states: AK, AR, AZ, CA, ID, KS, KY, LA, MO, MS, MT, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, TX, UT, WA, WY. And with NCEES Council Record, I can get licensed in other states quickly if needed.
Map of states where currently licensed as an engineer

Note that this is my current licensure as an engineer, not as a firm. Let me know about your project location and we can discuss whether additional business licenses/certificates of authorization will be required.

Actively Involved in the engineering profession

I have served in several positions in the Structural Engineers Association of Arkansas including:

  • Treasurer (2013-2014)
  • Vice-President (2016)
  • President (2017)
  • Board of Directors (2024-Present)

I have served on the Editorial Board of STRUCTURE Magazine since 2018.

I have delivered presentations for continuing education for the SEAoAR annual conference in 2015 and 2023, the SEA of North Carolina’s annual conference in 2022, and a recorded webinar for the National Council of Structural Engineering Associations (NCSEA) in 2023.

I was a coauthor on the Steel Joist Institute’s second edition of their Technical Digest 8 on Welding of Open Web Steel Joists, released in 2008.

I have written 5 articles for STRUCTURE Magazine since 2021.
